ML4all: a large-scale and cross-platform machine learning system

Due to the increasing importance of machine learning (ML) in a large number of domains, there is an urgent need to free users from algorithm and system concerns. In this talk, we will present ML4all, a system that frees users from the burden of algorithm selection and low-level implementation details. In particular, our system uses a new abstraction that is capable of solving most ML tasks. It also provides a cost-based optimizer on top of the proposed abstraction for choosing the best gradient descent algorithm in a given setting. Furthermore, ML algorithms can leverage platform-independence and cross-platform execution to boost their performance. In this talk, we will also show how ML4all leverages Rheem, a novel cross-platform framework, to achieve this. Especially, we will show how mixing single-node systems with big data processing platforms can speed up ML algorithms, such as SGD. Combining all these features together, ML4all can achieve orders of magnitude better performance than baseline systems.
