Research Focus at QCRI

My research focuses on scalable data mining. In particular, my interest is in mining the Web by using data-intensive scalable computing systems. As such, my research develops along two main axes: (i) tapping into the Web as a source of data and (ii) dealing with its immense scale. These two aspects combined create what people call “big data”. My goal is to develop new scalable data mining algorithms that take advantage of parallel and streaming solutions.

At QCRI, I am involved in the Arabesque project, a distributed system for large scale graph mining.
I have been working on extending its functionalities to graph search.
More recently, I have started to look at supporting temporal graphs and streaming inputs.

Previous Experience

Previously I worked as a Visiting Scientist at Aalto University in Helsinki, as a Research Scientist at Yahoo Labs in Barcelona, and as a Research Associate at ISTI-CNR in Pisa.

Professional Experience

I am an active member of the open source community of the Apache Software Foundation, working on the Hadoop ecosystem, and a committer for the Apache Pig project. I am also one of the lead developers of Apache SAMOA (http://samoa.incubator.apache.org), an open-source platform for mining big data streams.

I serve on the PC of several major conferences in the area of data mining, including WSDM, KDD, CIKM, and WWW. I co-organize the workshop series on Social News on the Web (SNOW, http://snow-workshop.org), co-located with the WWW conference.

Professional Associations and Awards


I received my Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from the IMT Institute for Advanced Studies of Lucca in 2012.
