He finished his PhD from the University of Maryland, College Park in 2003 under the supervision of Douglas W. Oard. He worked as a researcher at the Cairo Microsoft Innovation Lab and the IBM Human Language Technologies group in Cairo. He also taught in the Electrical Engineering Department at the German University in Cairo and the Faculty of Computer and Informatics at Cairo University. He supervised/mentored many Masters students, research assistants, and research engineers. Many of them have moved on to prestigious graduate programs at Carnegie Mellon, Purdue, Dublin City University, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, and Columbia University. He has also established three startups in the areas of electronic publishing, news aggregation, and audio production. He joined QCRI in February 2011 as the founding member of the ALT group.
