Coming to QCRI represents facing very exciting research challenges, which are tightly connected to real applications that can impact people interaction and access to information; Contributing to QCRI’s ambitious goals surrounded by a strong team of researchers in an international and dynamic work environment is a real privilege

Research Focus at QCRI

As a Principal Scientist, Lluís’s research at QCRI focuses on natural language understanding, that is, parsing open natural language text to get a meaningful representation of its content, allowing for more informed inferences in language-based applications, e.g., information extraction, question answering or machine translation. He is mainly interested in applying statistical models and machine learning techniques to produce rich linguistic analyzers, including syntactic, semantic and document/discourse level parsers.

At QCRI he is involved in two main projects. In the Iyas project, the goal is to incorporate deep linguistic analysis for developing a generic deep Question Answering system, able to reason through rich language structures to provide answers to complex questions. This system should also be the first one working on Arabic language. The second project aims at incorporating linguistic information in general, and discourse analysis in particular, to Statistical Machine Translation and its evaluation.

Previous Experience

Before joining QCRI, Lluís was an Associate Professor at the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC - Barcelona Tech), where he worked both in research and teaching activities with the Computer Science Faculty for 19 years. He advised 6 PhD and numerous Master students, and participated in 18 national and EU research projects, acting as the principal site researcher in ten of them. He has a recognized career in the Natural Language Processing field: 110+ papers, Program and Area Chair of major conferences, co-organizer of several international evaluation tasks, Associate Editor, Editorial Board Member and Guest Editor of special issues in the most relevant journals in the area. He was President of the Special Interest Group on Natural Language Learning (SIGNLL) within the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL), and he currently acts as Chair-elect of the European Chapter of the ACL.
